When you think of the retro style, you probably don’t think of dogs.
But there’s a very real connection between the styles and how the clothes are made.
Dog clothes are an integral part of the business of dog grooming and, for some, that means paying attention to the details, especially when it comes to the fur.
“A dog is a dog,” says Karen Evers, owner of the vintage clothing store The Vet, which sells dog clothing made with reclaimed dog fur.
“If you look at the dog clothing you’re going to find a lot of detail in the fur,” she says.
The vet says she sells about 200 pairs of vintage dog clothes every month, and says she doesn’t consider herself a fashion expert.
When you’re buying vintage dog gear, you’re looking for a piece of the past that you can’t buy right now, she says, but she’s also looking for something that’s not as “stale” as the current line of dog clothes.
I’ve noticed that there are so many people buying dog gear that it’s hard to keep track of them all, she said.
We’re always buying vintage, she adds.
“The best thing that we can do is to try to make it as interesting as possible.”
She suggests buying the right size of fur for the dog, or a fur-covered collar.
A vet will likely order you a fur collar to match the dog’s fur, and that can be pricey.
But the vet also recommends buying a collar that has a little extra material on it that you won’t see in a traditional dog collar, so it looks like a coat.
“I do that a lot because I feel like it gives it that bit more personality,” she said, “and that’s what I’m always trying to find.”
